Articles > Tips for staying safe with online banking

Know who you are dealing with - Always access internet banking by typing the address in to your web browser. Never go to a website from a link in an email and enter personal details

Keep hold of your cash - Don't be conned by convincing emails offering you're the chance to make some easy money. If it looks too good to be true it probably is! Be especially wary of unsolicited emails from outside the UK - it will be much harder to prove they are who they say they are.

Keep your PC secure - Use up-to-date anti-virus software, a personal firewall and anti-spyware software to prevent unauthorised access and viruses being downloaded onto your PC when you’re on the internet. If your computer uses the Microsoft Windows operating system (eg. Windows XP) and Web Browser (eg. Internet Explorer), keep it updated from the Microsoft website. Be extra careful of using internet cafes or any PC which is not your own and over which you have no control.

Check your statement - If you notice anything irregular (eg. transactions you don’t remember making or recognise) on your account contact your bank immediately.

Ensure that there is a locked padlock or unbroken key in the bottom right of your browser window before entering any information. The website address will change from 'http' to 'https' when a secure connection is made. You can check the Security Certificate is authentic by double clicking on the Padlock symbol at the bottom right of your browser window.

Never leave your computer unattended when logged in to Internet Banking.

Ensure that you log-out properly when you have finished banking online.
