Cheap Software for Students
Software4Students is a programme designed with Microsoft to supply low-cost software to students for home use. The licensee of the products is required to be a University, College or School student in the UK. The software is therefore much cheaper (typically discounted by 80% or more). Eg. Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 is £35 (RRP £482.97).
The website is www.software4students.co.uk.

Password protect your USB Flash Drive
Flash drives are more popular than ever, especially with students. Always make sure your work is saved in 2 places at once so you have a backup. Also, when you buy your USB flash drive, look for a ‘U3’ drive (there are lots available on Amazon). The U3 software password-protects the drive, so if it falls into someone else’s hands, they will not be able to access the drive’s files.

Where to buy a new laptop / netbook
John Lewis have a pretty decent range of laptops and netbooks (netbooks are basically small, low-spec, inexpensive laptops primarily designed for email, web browsing and web-based applications). I’d recommend staying away from a Celeron processor as these are quite slow, and if buying a netbook, choose one with a display of over 10 inches so it’s easier to read and the keyboard will be easier to use. John Lewis offers a 2-year warranty on all their laptops and netbooks and free standard delivery too.
Good luck, and have a great year! |
